INTERVENTION WITH HORSES
Equine-Assisted Intervention is based on carrying out different activities with educative and therapeutic aims, using the animal as a tool. There are various types of equine-assisted intervention: Hipotherapy or Equinotherapy and Therapeutic horse-riding.
Hipotherapy or Equinotherapy is an activity of a therapeutic nature, orientated towards people with physical, psychological and/or sensorial disabilities, with grave conditions, in which the horse rider does not have any control over the horse.
Therapeutic Horse riding is an activity with a therapeutic nature, orientated towards people with physical, psychological and/or sensorial disabilities, changes in behaviour, learning difficulties, failure to adapt in society, etc... in which the horse rider exercises a certain control over the horse.
Therapeutic horse-riding is an activity of therapeutic and sporting nature, orientated towards people with physical, psychological and/or sensorial disabilities, failure to adapt to society, or educative and emotional problems, where the horse rider carries out various exercises on the horse.
The programs of intervention with horses are carried out on the basis of some concrete objectives, to work according to the capacities of each horse rider. For this, it is important, apart from the initial assessments which are carried out, and the observation of each session, to do a preliminary medical report of the horse rider, so that there is authorisation to be able to carry out the intervention.
All of the equine-assisted intervention programs will be supervised by the special education teacher in the association, alongside the psychologist and professionals at the centre.
We carry out programs at the Equestran Center Can Forellac, in Sils, Girona, and they can be both in groups and individually, according to the objectives of the program.
The Equestran Center Can Forellac, is put at our disposition, in order to be able to carry out the activity, a multi-functioning room to carry out assessments, as well as a work room, a garden, a wooded area and a gymkana.
Our professionals are specialists, on the one hand in Equestrian Rehabilitation, and on the other, in Animal-Assisted Intervention. Furthermore, they have participated in the study "Resultats d'un protocol d'hipoteràpia en la rehabilitació de pacients amb dany cerebral", published in the physiotherapy magazine "Actualitzacions en Fisioteràpia" Númeri IV, Any 2008.
